Airline Operations and Delay Management

Airline_Operations_Delay_ManagementInsights from Airline Economics, Networks and Strategic Schedule Planning by Cheng-Lung Wu
Book Review by Gaurav Agarwal

Think about the February 2007 snowstorm that hit New York and about its catastrophic effects on JetBlue’s network that left 130,000 passengers stranded. Similarly, the severe January 1999 snowstorm that hit Detroit leaving more than 8,000 Northwest Airlines passengers stranded in planes on the runway. These incidents brought about changes in airline regulation in the US and many lawsuits for the airlines. While these were weatherrelated incidents, it did lead to airline and network planners pondering whether there was something inherently wrong in the way the networks were designed, and whether the design itself could have contributed to a situation that led to the severity of disruptions.

Cancellations and their Relationship to and Impact on Airline Service Quality

By Dr. Blaise P. Waguespack and Dr. Dawna L. Rhoades

cancelled_flightsThis paper is the first attempt by the authors of the ‘Service Disquality Index’ to relate cancellations to the index, and to model the impact of cancellations on overall airline service quality. Cancellations as reported in the Air Travel Consumer Report are compared and correlated to the SDI. Additionally, the impact of cancellations are added into the SDI and examined to measure the possible impact of cancellations on redistributing the ranking of airlines in the index. The inclusion of cancellations does not impact the ranking of the airlines using the SDI, but does support the inclusion of cancellations in the SDI going forward as a true measure of airline service disquality.

A Questionnaire Survey on the Impact of Alliances on Airline Operations

Regulatory restrictions on market access, ownership and control have pushed airlines toward the formation of strategic alliance groupings. Although alliance grouping is not the optimal solution, it does harness the airlines against the instability of the sector and enable them to reap as many benefits as possible. This questionnaire survey researches how airlines judge their alliances, given such dynamics in the airline industry, the current crisis caused by the slowdown in the economy, and the 11 th September events. More specifically, a study is conducted on how airlines perceive the impact of alliances on their operation in general and on passenger traffic in particular. In addition, we look to how different types of partnership agreements and different types of routes have affected the results, and if airlines of different size, operating from different region and belonging to different alliance groupings have been affected differently.
